Bola Tinubu has received a strong appeal from Latunbosun Oyintiloye, a well-known member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, asking for prompt action to address the skyrocketing costs of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) throughout Nigeria.

Speaking to reporters in Osogbo on Sunday, Mr Oyintiloye emphasised the growing weight that the rising cost of cooking gas is placing on regular people.

He stressed that having cooking supplies nearby shouldn’t make it harder for people who are already struggling to put food on the table.

Mr. Oyintiloye expressed disappointment that the directive issued by Ekperikpe Ekpo, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), on February 22 ordering LPG producers to cease exports had not resulted in relief for customers. He proposed that the producers may be clandestinely exporting LPG or the ban had not been fully enforced.

The former APC Presidential Campaign Council member brought attention to the startling figures that showed how much it now costs to refill a 12.5 kilogramme cylinder in different parts of the nation. These figures ranged from N17,500 to N18,000.

Mr. Oyintiloye emphasised the consequences of these outrageous costs, pointing out a worrying pattern in which a large number of customers were turning to conventional solid fuels like firewood and charcoal because they could not afford LPG.

He voiced serious worries about the potential negative effects of this transformation on the environment, including deforestation, desertification, and soil degradation as well as the potential for these problems to worsen erosion and climate change.

“This will, in turn, pose a serious danger to the respiratory organ, fatigue, headaches, confusion, and dizziness to the human system due to inadequate oxygen delivery to the brain, thereby reducing the overall well-being of people.

“In an attempt to substitute clean cooking gas to firewood and charcoal by cutting down green trees, this will affect human survival because there will be no adequate oxygen in the blood system,” he said.

He urged Tinubu to take drastic measures to crash the product’s price in the interest of the masses.

“The fuel subsidy removal is biting hard on the people, and the electricity supply is unstable.

“All relevant and critical stakeholders must join hands with Tinubu to tackle the challenges in the gas industry,” he said.

On the other hand, Mr. Oyintiloye praised Mr. Tinubu for taking proactive steps to stabilise the value of the Nigerian naira in relation to the US dollar.

Mr. Oyintiloye expressed optimism that the nation’s current economic problems would quickly be forgotten if patience and steadfast support for the president were shown.
