Six delegates to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were chosen from the Enugu State House of Assembly on the platform of the Labour Party (LP).

During Thursday’s plenary session of the Assembly, they declared their defection.

The defectors claim that “existence of irreconcilable division, incessant crisis within the Labour Party at the national level and across all the state chapters” is the reason behind their departure.

They asserted that the party’s capacity to effectively represent the interests of the people has been undermined by its unfortunate evolution into a state of continual strife involving numerous factions involved in legal disputes.

“The Labour party once a beacon of hope for progressive ideas have regrettably become synonymous with internal squabbles, thereby reducing its capacity to fulfil the aspirations of electorates.”

As examples of the party’s divides, they mentioned the cases of the Abure and Apapa factions, the national treasurer, and the NLC, their parent organisation.

They thanked the Labour Party leadership for their support and expressed hope that the PDP would provide them with a platform to go on serving the interests of their people.
