Nnewi Museum Opens To The General Public (Photos)

Nnewi Museum has officially opened to the public.

The museum which will not only serve as a tourism centre, but also a research centre for the next generation was opened, yesterday, 1st April, 2024, after many years of delay.

The museum which is located inside Igwe palace is home to antiquities, relics, archives, artefacts and information’s about Nnewi.

Speaking during the commissioning, Mr. Lawrence Okwuosa, a member of the Museum Management Committee, said that the opening of the museum was geared towards promoting the identity of Nnewi and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the town and beyond.

He said that his committee will manage the museum and is responsible to collect, preserve and also help to prevent the destruction of cultural objects. He appealed that artefacts in the hands of traditionalists, priests, or village heads should be brought to be preserved in the museum.

On his part, the Director, Nnewi Museum, Caleb Festus Okeke, said that the Museum will awaken the consciousness of visitors to the momentous era, the glorious beginnings of ancient Nnewi Kingdom, the hallowed roots from where all wisdom emanates.

It will be recalled that in 2020, Anaedooline reported that the museum which has the capacity to host about four hundred (400) persons at once, will fulfil the need to create a space for exploring the heritage and common traditions of Nnewi.

After Delays, Nnewi Museum Set To Open

The building of the museum was started by the former Governor of Akwa-Ibom State and Current Minister of Niger Delta, His Excellency, Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio (Imelu-Ora Nnewi), but was completed from the financial contributions of the Executive Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Chief Dr. Willie Obiano and some Nnewi indigenes.
