Falana Threatens To Drag Tinubu’s Govt To Court Over Electricity Tariff Hike

Femi Falana, a well-known human rights attorney, has threatened to take legal action against the Nigerian government in response to the recent sharp rise in electricity rates that has left customers saddled with enormous bills.

Falana sharply criticised the federal government’s proposal to expand the electricity pricing hike to customers outside “Band A” in an interview with Channels Television. The idea was made possible by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

He argued that the Electricity Act of 2023 did not justify such a spike and promised to use the legal system to bring the aggrieved Nigerians to justice.

Falana highlighted the lack of an electricity subsidy and charged that the government was trying to raise money for Distribution Companies (Discos) who were having financial difficulties.

He stated: “Under that law, there are certain steps to take, and we are going to embark on those steps tomorrow (today), which is to raise serious objections with respect to the impunity that has characterised the recent increase.

“At the appropriate time, if there is no response, we will have to go to court because the government had warned, the minister had warned that the increase this time around will only fetch the government or the discos N1.6 trillion, whereas the destination is N3 trillion.

“So, the poor people that the minister is talking about, the other bands, very soon, the government is going to extend the increases to them so that the N1.4 trillion the minister is talking about will be recovered.
