The Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stated on Sunday that he would prefer to stay in the party rather than quit in order to help it overcome its current difficulties.

Following the inauguration of a borehole he provided to Tike Ram Market in Pantami, Gombe State, Obi disclosed this to journalists in a Gombe interview.

He expressed optimism that the LP will overcome its difficulties and go forward as a single family, denying the rumours that he was going to leave. Instead, he claimed that he was more dedicated to maintaining the harmony inside the party.

“Our concentration should be on peace and I believe that we will resolve all situations,” he said.

On recent speculations of him running for the 2027 presidency with former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Mr Obi said: “Well, I’m more interested now in Nigeria’s success today than tomorrow.

“My commitment is about Nigerians living in a better society, given a better life and that’s my concern,” he said.

The former Anambra governor explained that he had been travelling about in the spirit of Ramadan to support Nigerians, especially the underprivileged, to help lessen the burden of the country’s current problems. This is why he donated the borehole.

In his response, “I’m here in Gombe and I came to Pantami market to help them in area of water supply that is the borehole I just inaugurated”, he replied.

Recall that despite being assured of the LP 2027 presidential ticket at its convention, there were rumours that Obi might have been looking for another political platform.

On Sunday, NLC spokesman Benson Upah stated that if Obi chose to go to a different political platform, the NLC would not obstruct him.

According to Upah, “The right of choice is available to Mr Obi. If he chooses to leave the party, that is his preference. We can’t sit in judgment over him on that.

“But if he chooses to remain, of course, Peter Obi is an asset any day. I rest my case on that,” he said.
