During the 2024 UTME exam, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has ordered all proprietors of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres to detain any parent discovered in the vicinity of any of their establishments.

The directive was given during the virtual final briefing for the owners of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

According to JAMB spokesman Fabian Benjamin, this order was required because of some parents’ invasive behaviour during the Board’s prior exercises.

According to Benjamin, who cited JAMB Registrar Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, any parent who disobeys this directive faces arrest as well as the possibility of their ward being disqualified from taking the exam.

Oloyede clarified that the reason for the necessity of this move was that numerous parents who have been intruding have been found to be facilitators of examination violations throughout time, and some of them have even disrupted the Board’s examinations in the past.

He continued by saying that some criminals also pose as parents in order to enter the institutions and commit other offences.

In addition, the helmsman of the Board stated that “a candidate for the examination must have attained the age of 17 years going by the extant national policy on education.”

“Therefore, it is evident that these parents had not allowed their wards to pass through the classes as defined in the document, hence, the determination to follow their wards to the examination venue with the aim of compromising examination officials.

“At any rate, it is clear to any discerning observer that these parents deserve to be sanctioned as they had obviously ‘smuggled’ underage children into the ranks of those scheduled to sit the examination,” the statement partly read.

The Registrar added that all preparations have been completed for the conduct of the 2024 UTME, which would take place in more than 700 CBT locations across the country.

He said that although the Board has taken sufficient precautions to address any potential technical issues that may arise during the test, it still anticipates a flawless exercise.
