How Nigerians inspire me to do more — Lookman

Super Eagles and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman on Wednesday night, scored a remarkable hat-trick, leading his team to a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final. This victory ended Leverkusen’s impressive 51-match unbeaten streak and marked Atalanta’s first trophy in 61 years. Lookman’s feat also made him the first player to score a hat-trick in a European final since 1975, securing Atalanta’s first-ever continental title.

Lookman, born in London and a former representative of England at youth levels, was part of the squad that clinched the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The 26-year-old switched his allegiance to Nigeria and debuted for the Super Eagles in 2022. After the game, Lookman expressed his gratitude for the unwavering support he receives from Nigerian fans.

“The support and love from back home [Nigeria] are unbelievable,” Lookman said. “It motivates me to improve not just in my game but also as a person. This support has elevated me to new heights. Competing in AFCON this January, we unfortunately lost in the final, but it united us as Super Eagles and the backing from home has been incredible.”

Reflecting on his performance, the Charlton Athletic youth academy graduate shared his long-held aspirations of memorable matches like the one against Leverkusen. “I’ve always believed in my ability to create and score goals and to assist my teammates. Over the past few years, I’ve taken my game to a new level and shown more consistency. I’m pleased with my progress, but this is just the beginning. I hope for more nights like this,” Lookman stated.

Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini also lauded Lookman’s achievements. “No one anticipated he could make such significant progress. He has done something that will be remembered in history. He has demonstrated incredible skill and has proven to be a match-winner,” Gasperini remarked.

Lookman’s exceptional performance and the support from his fans continue to drive him towards greater achievements, both on and off the field.
