George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has named one of the main contributors to Nigeria’s insecurity as climate change.
Akume stressed the ecological aspect of the nation’s insecurity problems during his remarks at the Nationally Determined Contribution Implementation Framework (NDC-IF) (2023–2030) inauguration on Thursday in Abuja.
Speaking through his Senior Special Assistant (Technical), Prof. Bolaji Babatunde, Akume underlined that a significant portion of the nation’s insecurity is caused by ecological factors. It is important to take climate change seriously, particularly for Nigeria.

He claimed that the NDC-IF paper is essential to tackling Nigeria’s climate change problems.
Akume emphasised that the framework would increase knowledge of ways to lessen climate change in the nation and that it is a national tool intended to improve cooperation, transparency, and resource mobilisation.
He remarked, “Mobilizing finance for the effective implementation of the NDC is imperative. The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicates that the window to limit global warming to 1.5° centigrade is rapidly closing.”
He contends that because climate change transcends national boundaries, it endangers not just the environment but also the socioeconomic foundation of societies everywhere.
The SGF added, “The NDC-IF is not just a document but a roadmap for transformative action. It lays out strategies, policies, and measures to guide our efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing resilience, and fostering sustainable development.”

Speaking at the function, Environment Minister Malam Balarabe Lawal underlined how critical it is for the nation to confront climate change and mitigation, as the NDC-IF has shown.
The minister stated that the NDC-IF offers a strong and complete framework for a sustainable future, and he was represented by the Ministry’s Director of Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management.
Lawal pointed out that persistent commitment and cooperation between stakeholders would encourage green growth and build resilience to address other issues facing the country.
Mr. Samuel Onuigbo, a former chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Climate Change, commended the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) for releasing the framework for implementing the NDC and advised that all project discussions be carried out.
