The N15 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, according to Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will give 30 million businesspeople better access to market hubs and industrial facilities.

During the 700 km highway project’s inauguration on Sunday in Lagos, where he was inaugurating his first year in office, he made this statement.

Tinubu stated, “It will fast-track the community’s development, bring development closer to the people, and give 30 million people improved access to production and marketing centres.

“You can easily predict a journey vertically and go along the horizontal line, and you can define the free movement of people,” he added.

Tinubu stressed that the initiative will promote free movement of people and hasten community development.

But the construction has caused controversy, especially with regard to the businesses that are about to be demolished. The initiative has drawn criticism from 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as well as former vice president Atiku Abubakar.

Recall that N2.75 billion has been set aside to compensate the owners of the 750 properties along the highway’s route that will be demolished, according to Minister of Works David Umahi.

Umahi gave the people confidence that the government would support and compensate individuals who were impacted.

“However, be rest assured that this government is a compassionate government that cares for you and will do the utmost to offer succour by way of compensation,” Umahi stated.

The 10-lane coastal route will travel through the states of Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom before arriving at Cross River, the intended connection between Lagos and the river.

He claimed that the road’s potential was immense since it will connect every part of the nation by two spurs: the African Trade Route, which links the Southeast to Cameroon, and the Sokoto—Badagry Motorway, which is currently being built.
