Dave Umahi, the governor of Ebonyi State, has spoken out about his chat with President Muhammadu Buhari over Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu.

The Nigerian government has charged the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader with treason.

On Tuesday, Umahi told State House journalists in Abuja that the situation might be resolved via political means.

The governor stated that it is up to the leaders of the South-East to guarantee that the out-of-court settlement option is successful.

“The President repeatedly said the matter is in court, we must appreciate his pedigree and integrity.

“He cannot just as a President say he is going to destroy the matter in court.

“He said, ‘Your cultural leadership should be able to initiate that with Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer’.

“This is over six months and we have been begging the President of Ohanaeze to take up that responsibility.”

Umahi recalls meeting with the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Inspector-General of Police.

“The ball is in our hand,” said the Ebonyi helmsman, adding that they are all willing to negotiate.
