Nigerians have demanded an apology from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the contentious remarks made by Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential nominee.

Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, made this call in a statement that was made public on Monday.

Recall that the former Vice President stated that the north does not require Yoruba or Igbo candidates for the president while speaking to northern stakeholders in Kaduna on Saturday.

The PDP presidential contender went on to say that he was the only one deserving of being elected in 2023.

Atiku stated, “I know the whole of this country. I have built bridges across this country. I think what the average northerner needs are somebody who is from the north, who also understands the other parts of Nigeria, and who has been able to build bridges across the rest of the country.

“This is what the northerner needs. He (the northerner) doesn’t need a Yoruba candidate or an Igbo candidate. This is what the northerner needs. I stand before you as a pan-Nigerian of northern origin.”

In response to Atiku’s controversial speech, Governor Wike stated that while he doubts that Atiku would make such a statement at this pivotal time for the nation, he said that a remark like that would support his struggle for equity, justice, and fairness in the PDP.

The governor of Rivers State urged PDP to address the problem immediately and make an appeal to Nigerians.

He admonished the biggest opposition party to take action or risk losing Nigerians’ support.

Wike continued by saying that Nigerians would start to associate the PDP with a lack of justice and equity.
