World food day is an annual celebration that holds every 16th October, aimed at tackling global hunger and malnutrition across the globe.

World food day calls for awareness and education in all sectors across the globe for the need for healthy, accessible and most importantly affordable sustainable diet to the human populace.

This event also promotes the need for actions for those who suffer from hunger, malnutrition and the need to look into what we eat.

FOOD is any substance we take when we are hungry to address our hunger and appetite, have energy, be strong, nourish our body and facilitate the proper function of the body.

The food we eat can be gotten from animals which include; beef, fish, and dairy foods, amongst others or from plants like, grains, tubers, and legumes among others. It is a known fact that one is as healthy as what he eats, as also, a healthy well-nourished mother produces a healthier baby with a stronger immune system.

Food is very fundamental and basic in human existence, yet 820 million of the human populace suffer from chronic malnutrition and under-nourishment with almost 5 million under the age of 5 and 60% women die every day of malnutrition-related causes. While millions suffer from hunger, 672million persons are obsessed, 1.3billion persons are overweighted.

We have moved from plant-based and fibre-rich meals to refined sugar, salts, starches, processed meals, meat and other animal-based products, less homemade meals, more fast foods, takeaway restaurants, food vendors and supermarkets. Thus, a scaring increase in the rate of obesity across developed and low-income countries where there is co-existence of hunger and obesity.

The effect of climate change and our ever-changing planet not only threatens but reduce the quantity and quality of crops and their nutritional value. There is a need for the government, farmers and agri-businesses to look into the agricultural sector, invest and promote locally produced foods to increase the diversity of crops and provide affordable healthier diets and a safer environment.

Companies and private manufacturers need to make a difference in positively influencing the food environment, provide accessible and affordable healthy diets to help reduce hunger and malnutrition in our society.

Unhealthy diets is a leading risk causes of death from non-communicable disease. Malnutrition and undernutrition affect one in three people and according to research, the number will be one in two people by 2025.

However, with the aid of global commitment and action, solutions could be made to reduce all forms of malnutrition across the globe. Ending child undernutrition could increase a developing country’s GDP and build a safer and more prosperous world for everyone.
