The Christian Association of Nigeria and the Catholic Diocese of Enugu have failed to make any comment on the alleged misconduct of the Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka.

Mbaka had prophesied during his December 31, 2019 New Year’s Eve service that the then governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, would emerge as governor of the state.

Though Uzodinma was declared winner of the governorship election by the Supreme Court on January 14, the reverend father’s prophecy sparked controversy.

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Adewale Martins, had alleged in an interview with BBC Igbo that Mbaka could be banned from preaching if he continued deviating from the doctrines and tenets of the Catholic Church.

Martins said, “Fr. Mbaka falls under the authority of the Bishop of Enugu Diocese and therefore he has the responsibility of cautioning him. I can imagine that this must be giving the bishop some challenges.

“It must be giving him a bit of a headache and I feel sorry for him and I hope he will find some way of dealing with this matter that has been recurring.

“Of course, what could be done in the end is either to say, ok you receive the sanction of being stopped from public ministry. That is a possibility. If it is not done, there must be a reason.”

However, when our correspondent contacted the Communications Director of the Enugu Catholic diocese, Rev. Fr. Benjamin Achi, he stated that the matter was under deliberation and that he could not speak on it.

Achi said, “We have put discussions about that issue on hold for now. We will have to issue an official statement on that. When that happens, it will be made public.”

Similarly, Pastor Bayo Oladeji, the spokesman for the CAN President, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, said that the apex Christian body could not speak on individual clerics.

Oladeji said, “Can doesn’t react to individual pastors (and priests). You may ask the Catholic bloc to speak about it, but CAN? No. It is not part of our terms of reference as a body.

“The church and the government are our brief. We believe that if individual pastors or priests misbehave, their own bloc has the power to sanction them. So, it is better you call the Catholic secretariat.”
