Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi did not hold back in his fierce criticism against his side after a lowly defeat to Osasuna confirmed an end to their La Liga title reign.

The Catalan giants succumbed to their sixth defeat of the season on Thursday night, July 16, with Messi typically leaving mouths agape with a stunning free kick but it was not enough to salvage their season.

In fact, regardless of the outcome of the game, Real Madrid were always going to secure the league title with a positive result against Villareal.

Speaking after the match, an agitated Messi criticized his side’s overall 2019/2020 campaign insisting his side were simply “not good enough”.

“We have to be self-critical. Starting with the players but doing a global self-criticism. We are Barca and we have to win everything.

We can’t look at Madrid. Madrid have done their job, but we have helped them a lot. If we want to win the Champions League, we have to change a lot. If we continue like this, we will lose the game against Napoli,” Messi went on.

Notably, Barcelona led the standings for a large chunk of the season, with wheels seemingly starting to fall off for Quique Setien’s side after the El Classico.

Barca’s only shot at redemption this season is in the Champions League, where they also face an uphill task in overcoming a resurgent Napoli side.

Earlier, Anaedoonline.com reported that two goals from Karim Benzema were all Real Madrid needed to clinch their 34th Spanish League title after beating visiting Villarreal 2-1 at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium.

The Frenchman opened scoring for Los Blancos just one minute before half time through a close-range shot from the right side of the six-yard box.

Benzema benefited from a superb run of play from playmaker Luka Modric who drove towards the danger zone with the ball before releasing it to the striker.

He doubled his side’s lead while completing his brace from the spot in the 77th minute after Sergio Ramos won a spot-kick for the home team.
