Five Months After Losing Father, Chimamanda Adichie Loses Mum

One of Nigeria’s best literature exports, Chimamanda Adichie has lost her mother Grace Adichie barely five months after the burial of her father, Prof. James Adichie.

Mrs Adichie died at the age of 78 on Monday in Awka, Anambra State.

“It was very sudden and we are devastated,” a family spokesperson said. The source also confirmed that burial arrangements will be communicated to the public soon.

Prof. Adichie died in June 2020 at the age of 88 and was buried in his hometown, Abba, in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State on October 9, 2020.

He was the first professor of statistics in Nigeria.

Mrs Adichie is survived by her six children and other relatives.

However, in a related story, the Nigerian multiple award-winning writer buried her father five months ago, Prof. James Nwoye Adichie, he was laid to rest on Friday, 9 October, in Abba, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The ceremony began with a Holy Mass presided over by Auxiliary Bishop Jonas Benson Okoye of the Awka Catholic Diocese, and drew the attendance of Ex-Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State, the Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Professor Charles Esimone, among other intellectuals and personalities, including the members of the Society of Young Nigerian Writers (Anambra State Chapter).

The family of Adichie announced the demise of their father, Prof. James Nwoye Adichie, on Wednesday, June 10, 2020.

He was 88years old.

He received his Ph.D. in statistics from Berkeley and went on to become Nigeria’s first professor of statistics. His dedicated life’s work was at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he was named professor emeritus in 2016. Upon his retirement, he lived in his hometown, Abba, Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace Ifeoma Adichie; their six children: Ijeoma, Uchenna, Chuks, Okechukwu, Chimamanda and Kenechukwu; as well as nine grandchildren, in-laws and many relatives.
