Barely 24 hours after parting ways with Fiorentina, Italian football icon, Gennaro Gattuso has reportedly emerged as the frontrunner in the race to replace Jose Mourinho as Tottenham manager.

Anaedoonline.ng reported that the former Napoli coach left his role at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Thursday 23 days after he was appointed as the Florence club’s head coach.

According to the Italian club, both parties decide to end the contract on a mutual agreement after deciding “not to follow up on the previous agreements and therefore not to start the next football season together.”

Gattuso is said to have held a positive meeting with the London club’s management after their move to sign former Roma coach, Paulo Fonseca was dealt a blow yesterday.

Fabrizio said, “Gennaro Gattuso in advanced negotiations with Tottenham board over a potential two-year contract. Jorge Mendes directly involved in the discussions between Spurs and former Napoli manager.”

The “first ‘official’ meeting between Tottenham board and Gennaro Gattuso representatives have been positive. Gattuso is the frontrunner as revealed yesterday after Fonseca talks collapsed… but there’s still nothing done, completed or signed. The board will decide soon,” the Italian added.

A week ago, Anaedoonline.ng reported that Fonseca was recommended for the Spurs job by the club’s new director of football and the 48-year-old Portuguese could sign a three-year contract.

Fonseca becomes the fourth coach to slip from the north-London club’s grasp as frustration grows further in their quest to replace Mourinho who has signed with Roma following his sack before the end of last season.

Recall that former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte previously held talks with the club’s hierarchy but the deal fell through after they failed to reach final agreements.

Spurs were equally handed a blow by a former manager, Mauricio Pochettino, who chose to remain at Paris Saint-Germain after he was approached by the club to replace Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel.
