Top Five Female Politicians In Ebonyi State

Just like in every other sector in life, the bridge between male and female representation is getting shorter. Women these days are entering doors they were previously denied access to in the past, the world of politics is seeing more women in participation than ever and the Ebonyi State women are not left behind.

These women have beat the odds to succeed in a male-dominated field. Here are some of our top female politicians in Ebonyi State in no particular order.

Elizabeth Ogbaga

Elizabeth Ogbaga is currently the Honourable Commissioner of Commerce and Industry Ebonyi State. She is one of the leading female faces in politics in Ebonyi State. 

Elizabeth Ogbaga is a Lawyer, Registered Nurse, and since venturing into politics, a Politician. Mrs. Ogbaga’s first foray into the world of politics was in 2007 when she was elected into the House of Representatives of Nigeria under the umbrella of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as a member representing Ebonyi/Ohaukwu federal constituency in the 6th Assembly.

While in the house, Elizabeth Ogbaga was not dormant, she was instrumental in attracting various projects to her constituencies such as  Oxygen Plants and Mammogram machines to Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki, constructing National Health Care Centres at Izenyi Agbaja in Izzi LGA and Ohagelode, she also sponsored the training of more than 50 youths on ICT as well as providing them with computers and accessories, built a computer center at community secondary school Isophumini Ishieke, and so many more. 

Due to her hard work, while serving as a representative, she was called upon by the regime of Governor Dave Umahi to serve as a commissioner on July 1, 2015. 

Dorothy Obasi

She was the first female legislator to be sworn into office in Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Dorathy Ogonnaya Obasi is one of the women pioneers when it comes to politics in the state.

Hon. Ogonnaya Dorothy Obasi is a professionally trained nurse who served in the field for a long time before venturing into politics. According to Mrs. Obasi’s philosophy, she believed that caring for people goes beyond the physical body which is why she delved into politics from nursing to cater to the social and economic needs of her people. She carried out several projects during her time in the house including drilling boreholes in her six constituencies, creating jobs for youths.

As a Christian politician, Mrs. Obasi has sponsored several crusades and programs in her constituency for the propagation of the gospel as she affirms. She is widely recognized in constituent as a champion for women affairs and empowerment, as health personnel she is a member of Safe Motherhood Ladies Association – a group committed to the improvement of women, childbirth, and home care.

Dorothy Ogonnaya Obasi has received several awards because of her commitment to ensuring that women are properly represented in politics and that basic amenities get to her community.

She is a powerful mobilizer of women for the progress of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). 

Maria Ude Nwachi

Famously known as Afikpo chick, Maria Ude Nwachi is one of the most controversial female politicians in Nigeria, nonetheless, you cannot mention the top five without a mention of her name.

Maria Ude Nwachi was a member representing Afikpo North East Constituency in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly between 2016-2019. During her time, she embarked on several personal projects for her constituents, she was famous for promising to use every penny she gets as a benefit including salary for her people. Maria was suspended by the house of assembly in 2018 for her photography side job while serving in the office.

Maria Ude Nwachi has a lot of scandals surrounding her past before she ventured into politics. The former legislator allegedly left Nigeria when she was 18 in search of greener pastures and while she was there, not much can be said about what she was doing. One thing that is certain about the Afikpo Chick is that she is one of the most social media savvy politicians in Nigeria.

She is currently a Special Assistant to the Vice President of Nigeria on Media Affairs.

Obiageri Oko-Enyim

Barrister Obiageri Oko-Enyim is the first female chairman, Afikpo North local government area, Ebonyi state.

Hon. Obiageri Oko Enyim is a Lawyer by profession. Not much is known about the female local government boss, but we will update you as we gather more.
