University being the highest level in our society is not arguable. Whether federal, state-owned, or private, they command prestigious space in the hearts of many. The highest office in the institution of the Vice-Chancellor. In this post, we will be profiling the VCs of the state government-owned universities in the southeast of Nigeria.

Abia State University, Uturu

Abia State University is one of the earliest state-owned universities in Nigeria was established in 1981 by then Governor of old Imo State (once Abia state and Imo state) Sam Mbakwe with name Imo State University till the creation of Abia State in 1991 the University was ceded to Abia State, and is now known as Abia State University Uturu.

Meet the current VC of the university Professor Onyemachi Maxwell Ogbulu.

Background Profile: Ogbulu, Onyemachi Maxwell was born on July 18, 1956, in Mkporobe Abia state, to Mr. David Nwanne and Mrs. Evelyn Nwanyinna Ogbulu. After he obtained his primary and secondary certificates.

Onyemachi proceed to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Nigeria Nsukka in the year 1980 and also his Master of business administration in Finance from the same university, and he also acquired a Ph.D Finance.

Professional career: Every journey of man has its starting point that leads to the part that one desire, before acquiring the bachelor degree Maxwell was once an Auxiliary Teacher, Asa High School, Asa, for a period of one year before he went ahead to acquire the bachelor and on returning to the school he was promoted to Graduate Teacher from 1981-82.

He left the position of a graduate teacher to pursue a greater high, in 1984, he was made an assistant lecturer in the Department of Banking and Finance in the then Imo State University, Okigwe, now known as Abia State University, Uturu.

Maxwell has once served in some finance institutions aside from the University like Corporate Finance Manager, Trust Securities Ltd., Owerri, Consultant Development Finance and Investment Company Limited, Owerri, Head of Trade Finance, EMB Finance and Securities Limited, PortHarcourt, etc.

He also serves as the Head, Department of Banking and Finance, Faculty of Business Administration, Abia State University, Uturu and Office of the head of Department Banking and Finance, University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. On December 1, 2020, Prof. Onyemachi Maxwell Ogbulu was appointed the new Vice-Chancellor of the University by the governor Abia State Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Uli

Anambra State University now known as Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) is a Nigerian tertiary institution owned by the state government located in Uli, a town in Anambra State. The university was established in 2000 with campuses in Uli and Igbariam. The office of their Vice-Chancellor is occupied by Prof. Greg Chukwudi Nwakoby.

Prof. Greg Chukwudi Nwakoby was appointed the Vice-Chancellor of the university in September 2018 by the governor of Anambra state Willie Obiano succeeding the outgoing Prof. Fidelis Okafor.

Ebonyi State University

Ebonyi state being the youngest state in southeast Nigeria (in terms of date of creation) has its owed university, the State University was founded in 1999 in Abakaliki the capital of the state and the office of its Vice-Chancellor is occupied by Professor Chigozie Ogbu.

Brief background profile:  Chigozie Ogbu was born in Umudomi, Igboeze-Onicha, Onicha LGA, Ebonyi State, he obtained his primary and secondary certificates from Presbyterian Primary School and St. Patrick’s College, Asaba Delta State respectively.

He went further to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry and Psychology from Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota in 1973 and his Doctor of Medicine (M.D), Rush Medical College, Rush University, Chicago, Illinois in the year 1976.

Professional career: After years of success outside the country Prof Chigozie Ogbu decided to come back to the country, coming back to the country in 1987 he was appointed the Consultant Paediatrician/Neonatologist and Head of Department of Paediatrics, Imo State Hospitals Management Board, Owerri.

In 1994, he became a Senior Lecturer and HOD, Department of Paediatrics, Abia State University, Uturu, and also the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (C-MAC), Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba. From 1995 to 1997, he served as the External Examiner, Department of Pediatrics, UNTH, Enugu.

In 1997, he was made a Senior Lecturer and Head Of Department Paediatrics, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.

In 2002, he obtained the Professor of Paediatrics, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki. Come the year 2018 Prof. Chigozie Ogbu was appointed the Vice-Chancellor, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.

Enugu State University of Science and Technology

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) is a university in Nigeria that was founded as Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH) on July 30, 1980, by the then Governor of Anambra State Chief Dr. Jim Nwobodo.

The university’s top-ranking office is currently occupied by Professor Charles Eze.

Prof. Charles Eze is a professor of science education and he was made the Vice-Chancellor of the university in 2020, succeeding Prof. Luke Anike.

Imo State University

The Imo State University (IMSU) located in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria was established in 1981, although some part of its campus was ceded by Abia State University, after the creation of Abia State in 1991. The university’s current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Peter Achunike Akah.

Brief background profile: Prof. Peter Achunike Akah was born on November 3, 1957, he hails from Orlu LGA of Imo State. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School, Okporo, and Bishop Shanahan College, Orlu.

Furthering his education he enrolled at the Federal School of Science, Lagos before gaining admission at the University of Ibadan where he obtained his bachelor’s degree and also a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. from the institution.

Professional Career: in 1984 after the completion of his doctorate degree he joined the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and in October 1995 he was promoted to the rank of Professor of Pharmacology.

He also served as the Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and the former Associate Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies and Dean Student Affairs of the university. He also once served as an adjunct professor of Pharmacology at the University of Uyo and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, as well as being a Consultant Pharmacologist to UNDP, NIPRD, and NAFDAC.

Before ascending to the position of Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University he was once an adjunct professor and Head Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, College of Medicine. In January 2021, he was appointed to take over from Professor Victoria Adaobi Obasi.
