Best Brain Contest Organizes Maths, Igbo Quiz for Anambra Secondary Schools

In its effort to promote Igbo language and culture, as well as to support mathematical solving skills among pupils in Anambra State, a registered non Governmental Organization, Best Brain Contest (BBC), on Friday, December 10, 2021, organized Mathematics and Igbo quiz competition among secondary schools in the state.

The event, which took place at Prof. Kenneth Dike E-Library, Awka, the state capital, involved twenty-one secondary schools, drawn from the 21 local government areas of the state. Participating students were drilled in different topics to test their in-depth knowledge of the subjects; after which first, second and third place winners emerged in each subject area.

After the competition, 17 year-old SS3 student of Differential College, Awka, Ekweli Victoria, emerged overall best in Mathematics; student of Comprehensive Secondary School, Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state, Madiebo Lucky, took second position; while student of Government Technical College, Ihiala, Nwachukwu Christian, occupied the third position.

On the Igbo language category, 16-year-old SS2 student of Comprehensive Secondary School, Nawfia, Chinwuko Excellence, got the first position; student of Differential College, Awka, Oluchi Ezeala, took the second position; while a student of Denis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha, Chukwuagozie Divine, occupied the third position.

Best student in each subject was rewarded with one hundred thousand naira; second position went home with fifty thousand naira each; while third position went home with thirty thousand naira each. Mathematics Teacher of Differential College, Awka, Chukwuemeka Emmanuel, and Igbo Language teacher of Comprehensive Secondary School, Nawfia, Otue Ann, were also rewarded for their outstanding performances in the teaching and learning of the subjects in their schools.

Speaking at the ceremony, chief promoter of BBC Quiz Competition, Hon. Frank Igbojindu (Chairman, Akpoazaa Group) said the contest was conceived to promote healthy competition among students, and to rekindle the burning love for education among them.

“The choice of Igbo is to promote the language and the cultural aspects of it among the people; while the choice of Mathematics for the quiz competition is to promote mathematical solving skills among the students,” Akpoazaa Group CEO said.

“Best students in each subject area, besides receiving monetary rewards, will be assisted in the purchase of their JAMB forms, and will be supported financially when they secure admission into the tertiary institutions. As BBC Ambassadors, they will also receive salaries from Best Brain Contest for twelve months.

“Giant billboards will be mounted for the champions, in addition to erecting sign posts for the champion schools. The organizers will also follow the students up to make sure they achieve their main goals of being in the school,” he added.

Earlier, the Proud Sponsor of the quiz competition, Chief Amb Dr Henry Iyke Mmerigwo (Onwa Alaife) Chairman Ifenalaife Foundation, who described education as key to success, said he sponsored the competition because of his love for education, to promote mathematical solving skills among students, and to rekindle the hope for the survival of Igbo language and tradition.

Director, Anambra State Library Board, Dr. Nkechi Udeze, commended the organizers for setting a standard, which she said, was worthy of emulation. She encouraged the pupils to take advantage of such events to develop themselves, and to promote their schools.

Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano on Secondary Education, Dr. Paul Ifeanyi, also commended Best Brain Contest for organizing the competition, and encouraged students to be part of efforts towards revitalization the Igbo language; which she said, is neglected in many quarters.

The quiz competition were adjudged free and fair by all.
