Rochas Okorocha, the congressman representing Imo West senatorial district, stated on Tuesday that the monuments he erected as governor of the state helped to place Imo on the map.
Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first President; Tafawa Balewa, former Prime Minister; Ikemba Ojukwu, former military governor of Nigeria’s defunct Eastern Region; Sam Mbakwe, first democratic governor of Imo State; Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia; Jacob Zuma, former President of South Africa, among others.
In a Facebook post, the former governor of Imo State claimed that he and his family had been attacked because of the square’s construction.

“Because of erroneous narratives and misconceptions regarding the monuments created during my stint as governor of Imo State, I have faced swarms of falsehoods and defamation against my personality, as well as assaults on my family members, for years.”
“I opted to remain silent for years, but I am certain that the New Nigeria must be established on realities and facts, not on lies and propaganda.”
In the film, Okorocha says, “The sculptures are inventions that I’m proud of.”
Imo State is now known for its inventions.”
“We never had an identity because there was no tourism, no nothing,” she says.

“Then I arrived with my tourist brilliance and created a site named Heroes Square.”
The statues are only found in a small section of the area.
