The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will make its ultimate decision on whether or not to shut down public universities by going on an indefinite strike today (Monday).

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the union has threatened to strike since November 2021 due to the Federal Government’s failure to execute an agreement reached between the two sides in prior years.

On Monday last week, ASUU proclaimed a lecture-free day in various of its branches throughout the nation to allow members to meet and educate students and the general public about the Federal Government’s apparent unwillingness to satisfy their requests.

A source at the University of Abuja told Newsmen that the members of NEC, including ASUU leaders from various public universities, had been in a closed-door meeting at the Ade Ajayi Auditorium in the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The meeting was, however, relocated to the Tayo Aderinokun lecture hall on Sunday midnight over fear that the auditorium might be bugged by secret government agents.

The union has promised to address a press conference at the end of the meeting which commenced at 12am Monday morning.

However, a final year student of the Benue State University, Miss Ene Mathias who spoke with our correspondent from the campus, said anxiety and tension have gripped students.

“Right now, we have no idea what we’re doing.”
Some students have already packed their belongings in anticipation of the big announcement, while others are still hoping for the strike to be called off.

“Some people are really relieved that a strike is imminent. They stated that they needed a break from their hectic academic pursuits. But, given the history of the ASUU strike, I don’t want to return to this institution for another year,” she bemoaned.
