The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has announced that it will discipline its members at the Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO, as well as the university’s Vice-Chancellor, over the “illegal” promotion of Dr Isa Ali Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.

The union stated that promoting the minister to a professor was unlawful at a news conference conducted in Lagos on Monday by its National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke.

ASUU claims that being a minister and a lecturer at the same time is impossible, and that the promotion encourages criminality.

Pantami was given the option of abandoning his employment as a minister by the union, which said he was not competent to be considered as a professor at the time.

He said, “You cannot be a minister and a lecturer in a university. It is an encouragement of illegality.

“Pantami has to quit as a minister and be tried for doing double jobs within the same federal system. He is not qualified. Pantami should not be treated as a professor.

“We have resolved to sanction ASUU members involved in his promotion and the VC of FUTO.”
