Gunmen attacked the Umuguma Divisional Police Headquarters in the Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo state in the early hours of Saturday.

According to another version, the gunmen immediately began fire on the divisional headquarters after blocking the roadways going in and out of the station.

Residents in the affected region fled into the bushes in fear of being injured by stray gunfire and weapons.

“These folks are cruel,” a local told Punch on the condition of anonymity. When they arrived, they blocked the highways, hurled dynamite into the police station, and opened fire in equal measure. They were now waiting to attack officers who had fled for their lives.

“Unfortunately, two police officers, Ifeanyi and Iyke, were assassinated. Ifeanyi was from the Umuguma community of Umunkwo. He was in his final year of studies at Owerri’s Imo State University. I was familiar with him. He has only been recruited for a year. He was attempting to scale the barrier when he was cut with a machete. He was sliced in half. On the scene, the young man died. This is a terrible situation.

“The second victim, Iyke, was from the Avu community. They shot him in one of his legs as he fled. He has been found dead now at a water stand where he possibly went to drink water. This is very unfortunate.”

It took the effort of firefighters from Owerri to quench the inferno.

Another source said, “Firefighters just quenched the fire now. The corpses of the two constabularies are here. They are about to evacuate them. This is very saddening. The entire place is in a state of fear and confusion as we didn’t sleep last night. The sounds of the guns and bombs were too frightening. The invasion was deadly. We are in God’s hands in this state.”
