The Kenyan government has denied any participation in the detention and extradition of Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu (IPOB).

Kanu had not been processed to leave the country, according to a letter sent to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s office on September 29, 2021.

The letter states, “According to our records as per the PISCES system, Nwannekaenyi Kenny Okwu-Kanu is still in Kenya because he has not exited the country.”

Kanu was arrested in June, according to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

Malami, speaking at a joint press conference with the State Security Service (SSS) in Abuja, said Kanu’s arrest and repatriation to Nigeria were the result of international collaboration with security agencies.

This sparked discussion about whether the United Kingdom, where Mr Kanu was based, or Kenya were involved.

Wilfred Machage, Kenya’s high commissioner to Nigeria, rejected Kanu’s detention in Kenya in July 2021.
The allegation, Machage claimed, was made to incite Nigerians in the South-East against Kenyans.

Despite evidence produced by Kanu’s family and attorneys proving Kenya’s complicity in Kanu’s kidnapping, he maintained his denial.

Machage died in January 2022, only days before his scheduled testimony in the kidnapping case of Biafra separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu in Nairobi.

The United Kingdom has denied any involvement in Kanu’s detention. Dean Hurlock, the organization’s spokesman, claimed Kanu had not been apprehended in the UK, however they could confirm his capture.

Kanu was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja, last June and his trial has faced constant delays.

The IPOB leader faces a seven-count charge bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari.

In 2019, a Federal High Court judge had revoked Mr Kanu’s bail that was granted him on health grounds and issued a bench warrant for his arrest on the same date.
