Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, voiced hope on Saturday that the Peoples Democratic Party will provide a candidate capable of rescuing Nigeria from its current predicament.

Obi said that the main opposition party is already debating how to produce an acceptable candidate in 2023 after receiving expressions of interest and nomination papers from a group of experts at his Onitsha house.

Some of the party’s presidential hopefuls have been meeting with stakeholders in various states in order to come up with a consensus candidate.

Some party insiders feel that a consensus candidate would ease tensions in the party ahead of the primaries.

“The presidential hopefuls are not stating the consensus is for a certain area of the country,” Obi added in his remarks. They might be referring to a Nigerian-wide agreement. As a result, we’re walking around engaging with people and talking about everything.

“You never know, I may be the consensus candidate they’re pushing.” We’ve been chatting, and I’m confident that in the end, we’ll figure out who is the best candidate for the position.

“In this recruiting, we must be able to investigate people’s pasts and what they have been able to do in their former employment to aid Nigerians in making the pick,” he says.

According to the former Governor, his manifesto would also be released soon, adding that if elected the first thing he would do is to bring back the trust in governance.

He added: “I can turn this country around. At the moment, this country is at its lowest ebb. Crime will be reduced when people are gainfully employed and I have a plan of how to bring people out of poverty as quickly as possible and the first line of tackling poverty is reviving the economy”.

Obi appreciated the professionals for sincerely believing in him, assuring them of his commitment to a better Nigeria.
