2023: Buhari Mandate APC Presidential Aspirants To Nominate Consensus Candidate

President Muhammadu Buhari met with presidential contenders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) late Saturday at the State House in Abuja.

Before the primary election on Monday, the Nigerian leader asked them to undertake conversations and come up with a tough candidate.

The discussion, according to the President, was part of an ongoing consultation process aimed at ensuring a seamless and deliberate transition to a standard bearer.

Buhari praised the candidates for their “courage and unselfish attitude” in stepping forward to serve in the country’s highest position.

He credited the APC’s successes in 2015 and 2019 to a shared vision, strategic alignment, consultation, fairness, resolve, and good leadership.

National and party interests were “overriding considerations in our thoughts and decision-making” in both cases, he said.

With 2023 coming, Buhari stated that the party must become more conscious of the changing environment, be receptive to voters’ desires, re-evaluate strategy, and enhance internal procedures.

The President revealed that he began his consultations with stakeholders with the APC Governors.

The President stated that they should go into the election with strength, unity of purpose, and a candidate who would offer Nigerians hope while assuring the party’s success.

Despite the fact that the meeting with aspirants was the second in a series, the President intimated that further meetings will be held.

“I extend a similar reminder to all of you distinguished aspirants. Our choice of flag bearer must be formidable, appealing to the electorate and should command such ability to unify the country and capacity to address our critical challenges.

“I urge all of you to hold consultations amongst yourselves and with the party, to build a consensus in a manner that would help the party reduce the number of aspirants, bring up a formidable candidate and scale down the anxiety of party members”, he said.
