Nigerians have continued to voice their displeasure with religious extremism perpetrated by certain Muslim faithful who delight in lighting innocent people of the country fire over purported anti-Islamic remarks.

On May 12, Muslim teenagers set fire to Deborah Samuel, a female student at the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, for allegedly disrespecting Prophet Muhammad.

Concerned Nigerians reacted angrily to the event, demanding that the killers be apprehended immediately.

While some Muslim clergy denounced the killings, others backed the assailants, claiming that Islam has a boundary that must not be crossed.

Only a week after Deborah’s killing, another Christian woman narrowly missed being murdered in Katanga, Bauchi State’s Warji Local Government Area, for supposed blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

After hearing of the approaching danger, Muslim teenagers reportedly launched a search for the lady right after Jummaat prayers, but she was taken away to safety.

On Saturday, June 4, a crowd killed a member of a vigilante group over suspected blasphemy at the famed Timber shed market, Federal Housing Estate, Lugbe Abuja.

After an altercation with an unnamed Imam, the victim, Ahmad Usman, was assaulted and burned alive by Muslim youngsters, according to the FCT police leadership.

Nigerians who talked with our correspondent in Abuja on Saturday were outraged and urged a halt to the heinous practice, warning that any additional efforts may lead to religious conflict in the nation.

John Adoche, a public affairs expert in the nation’s capital, has urged the National Assembly to rapidly pass legislation to protect the Muslim lads from jungle justice.

He said, “the National Assembly needs to come up with a law that will stop these guys with immediate effect. Lynching an innocent citizen for alleged blasphemy or whatever should attract the death penalty”.

“Once two of the suspects are executed, others will learn and this ugly act will stop. Even the Imams that are encouraging these attacks should also be prosecuted”.

A businessman in Abuja, Mr Nwachukwu who witnessed the killing of Usman in Lugbe, expressed anger over how the “murderers are being pampered”, and called for the arrest of the Imam.

He said, “Since this thing happened a few hours ago, nobody has been arrested. Is it that some people are above the law in this country? How can you kill an innocent man and still be walking free in the street?

“The Imam that mobilized these boys to kill the man has not been arrested. Why? Is it that the police don’t know him or he ran away? This is why this kind of incident may not stop, this is a religious war and should be taken seriously before it escalates”.

Another respondent, Pastor David Ayoba alleged that the agenda is to silence Christians in the country.

He said, “The agenda is clear. They just want to silence Christians and that is just what it is, otherwise, how can you fight for God?

“The god is no longer the one defending the people, the people are not the ones defending their god. This is terrible”.
