Nzuko-Ora Nnewi, the town union body of Nnewi, has introduced levies on markets, retail shops, plazas, filling stations, and other business organizations in Nnewi.

The levies according to the President-General of Nzuko-Ora Nnewi, Chief Maduka Atuenyi were imposed as part of efforts to generate funds to assist security agencies in the town.

He said that payment of the security levy is to ensure that adequate support is given to the local vigilante to enable them to ensure that the lives and properties of residents in Nnewi are protected.

Speaking, Chief Maduka who is a US-trained security expert, said that due to the security challenges that seemed to have overwhelmed the conventional security agencies, there is a need to support the local security architecture in Nnewi by providing them with the needed logistics for effective community policing.

The President-General revealed that since he assumed office, he has sustained Nnewi Security Outfit with money being donated by Nnewi sons and daughters through the Nnewi Security Trust Fund chaired by Chief Cletus Ibeto, but since his recent ordeal in the Department of State Security Service (DSS), some of the donors have pulled out because of fear.

Chief Atuenyi who is passionate about security said although the reasons some of the donors gave are substantial, this will not deter him in his bid to ensure that Nnewi is not overrun by criminals, hence the need to introduce the security levy.

Agbo-Edo Market Traders Complain About Storage Levy; Saying That Its Too High

The Community Leader said that the N200 levy which will be collected in markets, hospitals, retail shops, plazas, filling stations, and other business organizations in Nnewi, will be monthly and will also be accounted for.

He, however, advised Nnewi residents to ensure that they pay the levy as this help the efforts being made to keep the town safe.
