There are signs that the Peoples Democratic Party, the main opposition party, may lose its support base and strongholds in Rivers State during the general elections in 2023.
The rumored selection of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as the PDP’s vice presidential candidate and the indicated discontent with the results of the just-concluded presidential primaries provide the basis for the impending unrest.
As a result, many PDP veterans and supporters are allegedly feeling discouraged and discussing terms for defecting to the All Progressives Congress, APC, or Labour party.
Findings in Rivers State revealed persistent political horse dealing intended to cause a drastic collapse of the current PDP structures into the APC or LP at the first general election bell.
Chief Emeka Beke, the chairman of the Rivers State APC, alluded to a strategy to transfer the PDP’s track record of electoral success in the state to the APC.
In an exclusive interview conducted in PortHarcourt, the capital of Rivers State, Beke revealed this.
The APC chairman also asserted that Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential nominee for 2023, would even receive the minimum 25 percent of the vote necessary by the election law when the determined preparations were coordinated and put into action.
When questioned further, Beke revealed that the state APC leadership was making every effort to ensure that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos State, and the APC’s candidate for president in 2023 win in all states within the South-South geopolitical zone, and Rivers State in particular, regardless of the fact that Tinubu had defeated Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, the most recent minister of transportation, in the party’s presidential primaries.
Separate investigations also revealed that the APC structures in the state were coming together as the divided state leaders chose to cooperate to advance the party.
Reliable sources said that vigorous PVC and door-to-door activities have been launched by the APC political foot soldiers throughout the state’s highland and riverine regions.
In collaboration, Beke said, “What we are doing now is that we are going around the wards, units and everywhere to campaign and make our people understand the importance of good governance in the state.
“If you want to win elections you need to mobilize your people. So, first, the people should go and get their PVCs. That is the most important thing.
“Then make them understand why they need to change from the present PDP government to the APC-led administration in the state come 2023 because Governor Nyesom Wike has failed Rivers people”.
