Before now, Igbos literally have the lowest turn out in every election year either due to lack of trust of the electoral body, INEC or a means of civil disobedience, agitation for breakaway from the country.
But this might not really be the case as Igbos are scattered across the thirty-six (36) states in Nigeria and constitute the major voting block of every zone.
Dino Melaye, a former senator from Kogi West, and Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, have criticized the South East’s (Igbo) voting power in several interviews because of the region’s comparatively low electoral turnout.

Their statements are made out of sheer ignorance, as the Igbos are not limited to the south east Nigeria and we will dispute this asertion using latest INEC release on voters registration in Nigeria.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), however, has acknowledged an increase in voter registration requests from the five states of the South-East and as well has shared more light on number of registered Igbo voters across the six (6) geopolitical zone in Nigeria.
The latest release from INEC on 30th May, 2022 put voter registration as at the time as follows:
South East- 10,574,956;
South South- 14,226,471;
South West- 17,419,669.
Total South- 42,221,096.
North Central 14,388,386;
North East- 12,025,167;
North West- 21,215,186.
Total North- 47,628,739.
Gd Total- 89,849,835.
INEC Sends Warning To APC, PDP, Others As They Resume Voters Registration
In the last update of No of INEC Registered Voters of the Igbo of the South East with PVCs are as follows:
S/E Igbo with PVCs Residents- 10,574,956;
S/E Igbo with PVCs resident in the 19 Northern States + Abuja – 12,800,226;
S/E Igbo with PVCs resident in South South- 6, 125,525
S/E Igbo with PVCs resident in the South West- 6, 505, 555.
Total Igbo population nationwide with PVCs is 36,006262.
