The Academic Staff Union of Universities has been on a protracted strike, and the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals and the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers have urged the Federal Government to put a stop to it immediately and in the best interests of the country.

“The failure of the Federal Government to honor the agreement struck with the union since 2009 is very troubling considering the harmful impact the protracted strike will produce in the life of these youngsters,” said Umoh Ofonime, the Deputy General Secretary of NAAPE.

“NAAPE, therefore, completely supports the position of the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress to embark on a nationwide protest on July 26 and 27, 2022 in solidarity with the trade unions in the Nigeria Public Universities and others.”

Comrade Abdulrasaq Saidu, the general secretary of the ANAP, urged the government of President Major General Mohammadu Buhari (retired) to put an immediate halt to the ongoing strike before it spirals out of control in a statement released to the media on Monday.

The ANAP observed that the country’s social vices have increased as a result of tertiary students’ continued homebound behavior.

In addition, the group threatened to close the aviation industry in sympathy with the strike if the government did not take immediate action to meet ASUU’s demands.

The ANAP further pointed out that the over four months of strike had made the educational system a laughing stock in front of the entire world.

The union highlighted that ASUU, NASU, SAUTHRIAI, and NAAT had been on strike for more than four months as a result of the government’s alleged refusal to sign the renegotiated 2009 Agreement with ASUU and its consistent disregard for CBAs that Unions voluntarily sign.

The ANAP stated that if the ASUU strike is not properly managed, it will eventually result in a terrible situation because education continues to be the cornerstone of any country aspiring to greatness.

“Our children are using eight years to read courses of four years with resources being wasted. We cannot continue this way,” the statement read in part.

The ANAP stated that the future of education was dismal because there was little to no attention paid to the system because the majority of politicians’ children were attending school abroad.

The union forewarned that in opposition to the deplorable circumstances in the tertiary education sector, its members will support the Nigeria Labour Congress’ stance.

ANAP claims that all of its members have been immediately put on alert for solidarity activities in response to the Nigeria Labour Congress’s direction.
