In response to a claim that their late son was engaged in the drug trade, MKO Abiola’s family issued a statement, to which reactions have followed.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, a Nigerian journalist named David Hundeyin said that Abiola dealt in heavy narcotics when he was still alive in a story titled, “Bola Ahmed Tinubu: From Drug Lord to Presidential Candidate.”

The late MKO’s family responded to the allegations in a statement by Yushau Abiola, who called it unsubstantiated and refuted the allegation made by Hundeyin in his report.

The journalist, according to the family, was nothing more than a troublemaker out to tarnish their son’s reputation. They asserted that Hundeyin had his name permanently inscribed in the sand of fake news.

They further said that contrary to what Hundeyin falsely stated, neither the bank accounts of the late businessman’s companies nor he were ever frozen.

The MKO Abiola family claims that their son was so well-respected and dignified that he was the first Nigerian to have been admitted to the United States of America without a passport from another country.

The journalist’s family questioned why he would down to the level of repeating a 2015 false accusation published by John Campbell in the Daily Beast, an American tabloid.

On the other hand, Nigerians have started using the microblogging site Twitter to convey their viewpoints on the subject.

“MKO was a great businessman and philanthropist, but his source of early wealth was a well publicized ITT corruption. Best to keep quiet, and let the public use the news.”

@EricEsoimeme wrote: “David Hundeyin’s Character assassination of Abiola and Tinubu is an attack on the Yoruba people. I am glad that the family of MKO Abiola have come out to condemn this.

@General_Oluchi wrote: “Abiola’s family is expected to deny everything written in that article. Denial is usually the first stage.”

@drpenking wrote: “The fact that most of these Nigerian news sites did not publish or repost David Hundeyin’s work but they are rushing to publish the replies from families, says a lot about journalism in Nigeria.”
