The organisers of ‘Naija Star Search,’ an afrobeats-focused talent search show, have stated that the competition will sustain the current momentum of the Nigerian music business and shape the next generation of afrobeats stars.

The reality TV show, produced by Kennis Music and StarTimes Nigeria, will premiere on StarTimes on Sunday, September 4, 2022.

Kenny Ogungbe, ID Cabasa, and Asha Gangali will serve as judges on the show, which will be hosted by VJ Adams.

Speaking at the unveiling of the show on Monday, August 30, 2022, Ogungbe highlighted the successes that had been recorded by the present crop of afrobeats artistes, adding that it was a landmark development for the entertainment sector.

He said, “We are trying to package what can sustain Nigerian music, so that 10 years down the line, when the likes of Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido start to slow down, a new generation of talents will be on hand to carry on from where they stopped.”

The Chief Executive Officer of StarTimes Nigeria, Tunde Aina, also stated that Nigerians now prefer their music to foreign music and as such, there should be room for others to showcase their talents.

He said, “Nigerian music is getting more popular and Nigerians now enjoy their music more than foreign ones. The present afrobeats singers are good but we have so many untapped talents that we need to invest in.

“So, we at StarTimes have decided to give them the opportunity to nurture their talents. That is why we have the collaboration with Kennis Music. I hope that through this programme, we can build more talents for the music industry.”

Also speaking, popular music producer, ID Cabasa, posited that the platform was needed to sustain the efforts of legendary afrobeats singers who worked hard to take the genre of music to its present level.

“Anything one does not pass on to those behind one will definitely die. I have a strong belief that this initiative will sustain afrobeats beyond this generation.”
