PDP Crisis: Party Divided Into Two Dominant Factions – Afegbua

According to Kassim Afegbua, a former commissioner for information in the state of Edo, there are two groups within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A few days before the start of the general election campaign in 2023, Afegbua offers his opinion.

Speaking with Newsmen over the weekend, the former PDP leader stated that the party is split between Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, and Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate.

Afegbua added that Governor Wike has the backing of fifteen of the party’s executive members out of its 19-member National Working Committee, while Atiku and the party’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, only have four members each.

He cited the previous meeting, where only four members showed up while fifteen members opposed to Wike abstained.

This, according to the former commissioner, is evidence that Ayu lacks the loyalty, solidarity, and support of the other fifteen members.

When discussing the vote of confidence the party’s National Chairman received, Afegbua questioned how long the decision would be upheld.

He recalls that Uche Secondus, the party’s former chairman, received a vote of confidence from members of the National Executive Council before being ousted.

According to Afegbua, the NEC members’ support for keeping Ayu in office might not endure.

This occurs at the same time as the administration of Governor Wike has been demanding that Ayu resign from his position due to Northern dominance in the party.
