PDP Crisis: Ortom Opens Up On Ditching Wike For Ayu, Atiku

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has denied betraying Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, whose camp has been calling for the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu, the PDP’s national chairman.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, a prominent member of that camp, had denied supporting calls for Ayu’s dismissal.

Ayu, who is also from Benue State, was nominated by Wike and Ortom and secured their support before succeeding Uche Secondus as National Chairman in 2021.

Ortom Defies Wike And Declares Opposition To Ayu’s Removal

The Benue governor was responding to claims made by Jemgbagh Development Association that he was involved in the attempts to have a fellow Benuean, the PDP national chairman, removed from office.

Ortom allegedly denied claims that he supported Ayu’s dismissal in a statement released on Monday by his chief press secretary, Nathaniel Ikyur.

After meeting with the Jemgbagh people of Zone B senatorial district on Tuesday, the governor of Benue state quickly reversed course and declared his position is clear on the party dispute in a statement from Makurdi.

He continued by saying that when Bot members asked his view regarding the party’s current problem, he gave them the “truth” and hoped they would do the situation justice.

However, he expressed surprise at the story that appeared on Tuesday’s top page, claiming that he had just returned from London with Wike.

He stressed the party’ unfairness to Wike, adding that one had the right to protest unprotected right as Politics is about interest.

“In Benue State, we do not have any problem, from bottom to top we are good to go as far as our party is concerned,” the governor said after returning from a trip to London, UK with Wike.

He added, “The BoT members were here some few days ago and we deliberated on the matter. They sought my opinion first to know what my thinking was about the crisis.

“I told them that truth as far as I am concerned; and they took it with passion and also asked me for recommendations which I gave.

“That was it all. That was done and I hoped that they will do justice to it so that our party will take over power in 2023.

“But, the headline is that I have split with Nyesom; I just came back from London with Wike this morning (Tuesday).

“We are friends and I still maintain my stand on what I said. I have not moved away from there, that I still sympathise with Wike on the injustice meted on him.

“Politics is about interest and where your interest is not protected, you have a right to protest and I think that is what is happening.

“The party leadership has not been fair to Governor Wike based on activities that took place during and after the convention.

“We have not been able to deploy adequately the internal conflict mechanism to resolve those issue and this is all I have been saying.

“I sympathise with him and still stand with him that the leadership of the party at the national level should do the same thing.

“In politics nothing can be late, no matter how difficult it may seem as if everybody brings himself down to the level of getting others who are aggrieved.

“And to say that some of us are not happy with the injustice that has been meted, we remain committed to PDP and I feel that the right thing should be done to put us together.”
