Ifeanyi Okowa, the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and governor of Delta State, has responded to Nyesom Wike’s reported intention to run for president in 2027.

There have been rumors that PDP presidential nominee Atiku Abubakar offered to back Wike’s bid for the presidency in 2027 during their meeting on Thursday.

In response to the news, the administration of Governor Okowa characterized the pledge to support Wike’s presidency as unrealistic.

Governor Okowa is unmoved by the claim, according to a Delta State PDP member of the House of Representatives who spoke with Leadership about the issue.

He claimed that Atiku also promised Okowa the same thing when he announced him as his running mate at the PDP National Headquarters in Abuja.

The legislator added that Atiku had indicated Okowa would be a good successor to him as president.

He claimed that Atiku took into account factors including Okowa’s extensive political experience and upward trajectory, which put him in a strong position to succeed Atiku as president.

The lawmaker claimed that if Atiku wins in 2023, not only will Atiku be aware of Okowa’s skills, but the entire nation will as well.

He said, “He already has the qualities from the local government level to the state, National Assembly and now going to the federal level. So, who else can compete with him after Atiku?”

The legislator continued by saying that unlike Wike in this new pledge, Atiku undertook extensive conversations with party stakeholders before selecting Okowa, including governors, members of the National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, and other leaders to solicit their advice.

Not because of a desire to run for president, he claimed, but rather out of a want to avoid being associated with being a traitor once more, the Delta State Governor will never participate in the negotiations.

Okowa would even prefer to play along, he continued, in order to preserve the Wike-extended hand of amity.

The lawmaker said, “While I can read the body language of my leader, he cannot be distracted about such a thing. He is a perfect politician that knows the game. You don’t give what you don’t have. Can only one person make someone a president in a country like Nigeria? We know Wike in and out. Wike wouldn’t take such promise serious considering that he has already drawn a battle line.”
