According to Dr. Edor John, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), some understanding has been achieved with the Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

John told reporters on Wednesday that while there have been some changes to the venue for ASUU’s Congress at the International Conference Centre, only the National Executive Council (NEC) will transmit the decisions.

He asserted that the branch cannot stop the strike, highlighting the fact that only NEC has the authority to do so, and that no government official should now consider splintering ASUU.

Edor said: “We can’t give you full details of what briefings transpired in Congress , because it is a process that we will collate and analyse at NEC in Abuja on Thursday.

“But it is a process arising from the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria , Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila to see if there can be an amicable and “Speedy” resolution .

“Some understanding have been reached, some shifting of grounds have been made, so we need to process these at the various organs of the Union and the final resolutions will be taken at NEC when we meet on Thursday.”

Dr. John continued by admonishing the Federal government to concentrate on resolving the problems ASUU is facing.

The union leader continued by saying that there was no need to register additional organizations or unions in an effort to split their ranks.

Edor pleaded with the federal government to abandon the notion of outlawing ASUU, pointing out that the University of Calabar neither has nor is aware of any members of the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA).
