Buhari Issues Directives To Nigerian Army Ahead of 2023 Elections

President Muhammadu Buhari advised the Nigerian military forces to stay apolitical ahead of the 2023 general elections on Monday in Sokoto State.

Buhari also asked them to continue operating within the framework of the constitution in order to ensure the successful conduct of the general elections next year.

In his opening remarks at this year’s Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference, Buhari urged the Army to continue to strengthen its human rights duties during operations in accordance with global best practices.

This was revealed by Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, in a statement.

President Buhari hailed better human rights duties by security services as “the key road for gaining the hearts and minds of the people.”

Regarding the 2023 general elections, the Nigerian leader stated that it is critical that the Army and the armed forces in general support the civil authorities by creating a calm climate that allows for the elections to be held successfully.

Buhari expressed satisfaction that the Chief of Army Staff had already reviewed the Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct to advise servicemen during the 2023 general elections.

He said, “The professionalism you exhibited in the successful conduct of the Anambra, Osun and Ekiti states elections should also be reflected in the 2023 general elections.”
