Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, has expressed surprise at the pushback on President Muhammadu Buhari from governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Party (APC) over the Naira redesign policy.

The presidential candidate of the New Nigerian People Party (NNPP) said it surprised him to see APC chieftains publicly criticizing the Nigerian leader for siding with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to have some of the country’s currency notes changed to address issues such as vote buying and money laundering.

According to news reports, certain APC governors have taken the federal government, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the Attorney General of the Federation to court over the new naira redesign strategy.

The APC leaders chastised President Buhari’s administration for enacting such a policy at a time when the country was already dealing with several difficulties.

In response, Kwankwaso stated that the state authorities reacted in this manner because the policy eventually rendered their riches unusable.

“In each state, you have branches of banks, and in some states, you even have the national headquarters of those institutions,” claimed the NNPP presidential candidate. On the one hand, we expected them (governors) to seize all of the billions from government buildings and so on.

“But we realized these same governors were abusing their leaders, insulting them; I was shocked. I never thought some of them could abuse Buhari to that level.

“On another hand, I was surprised that facts were coming out, and we began to wonder what was wrong with them. Maybe EFCC was right that some governors are keeping billions of naira in their compounds across the country.

“Now the policy has made that looted money completely useless; I think that is why they are angry. So we are so happy with the federal government on that; the money they have collected is completely zero; it has expired.

Kwankwaso urged security and anti-graft authorities to keep an eye on politicians in order to prevent vote buying in any form in the 2023 national elections.

“Please tell all members of NNPP to join EFCC, to join the police and other security agencies that wherever they see attempts to buy votes, please stop them,” Kwankwaso said.
