President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, on his victory in the 2023 Presidential Election.

On Wednesday morning, the outgoing President Buhari issued a statement through his media adviser, Garba Shehu.

According to Buhari, “I congratulate His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory. Elected by the people, he is the best person for the job. I shall now work with him and his team to ensure an orderly handover of power”.

Breakdown Of Results As Tinubu Is Announced The Winner of 2023 Presidential Election

For a region that has seen backsliding and military coups in recent years, this election illustrates democracy’s enduring relevance and capability to provide for the people it serves, according to Buhari.

Buhari went on to say that competition is healthy for democracy, saying, “there is no doubt the people’s decision has been rendered in the results we see today.”

He noted that this did not mean the exercise was without flaws.

In his words, “for instance, there were technical problems with electronic transmission of the results. Of course, there will be areas that need work to bring further transparency and credibility to the voting procedure.”

He said none of the issues registered represent a challenge to the freeness and fairness of the elections.

“I know some politicians and candidates may not agree with this view. That too is fine. If any candidate believes they can prove the fraud they claim is committed against them, then bring forward the evidence.

“If they cannot, then we must conclude that the election was indeed the people’s will – no matter how hard that may be for the losers to accept. If they feel the need to challenge, please take it to the courts, not to the streets,” he tasked the losers.

Buhari has so warned that deviating from this route indicates they are not acting in the best interests of the people, but rather to incite, to put people in danger, and all for personal, selfish benefit.

He also advised all candidates in the just ended elections that, after the inevitable divisiveness that comes with any election, it is now time to join together and behave responsibly.

“I call on all candidates to remember the peace pledge they signed just days before the election. Do not undermine the credibility of INEC. Let us now move forward as one. The people have spoken,” he said.

2023: Peter Obi Congratulates Atiku As He Becomes PDP Presidential Candidate

Remember that Buhari, while voting in Daura on Saturday, exhibited his ballot papers publicly for all to see who he supported.

Mere minutes later, his actions had sparked extensive debate within the polity, with many Nigerians divided on whether he had broken the election act.

Garba Shehu would later absolve his principal of such infractions in a statement, claiming Buhari just presented his voting paper as an unusual demonstration of commitment to his party and chosen candidate.

Tinubu later lost Katsina state to the opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
