Charles Oputa, also known as Charly Boy, has slammed INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu for proclaiming Bola Tinubu the winner of the February 25 presidential election despite resistance from the Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party.

Both parties and their candidates (PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi) are fighting the election in court. In the election, Mr Tinubu represented the APC.

Mr Oputa accused the INEC chair of “scattering” Nigeria by proclaiming Mr Tinubu as the winner of the hotly disputed presidential election in a tweet on Monday via his official Twitter account.

“See dis one. Dis shameless conconbility. I need help to curse dis man, who wan help me? Man wey wan scatter our Naija, e no go ever better for you,” Mr Oputa wrote.

Charly Boy’s post came only days after Peoples Gazette published a leaked recording showing him plotting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo to mobilize young Nigerians to resist Mr Tinubu’s election as president-elect.

INEC did not react quickly to queries for comment on Mr Oputa’s post.

According to the audio, Mr Obasanjo instructed Charly Boy and former Governor Donald Duke to lead the demonstration that would “paralyze” the country, and that if President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime decided to unleash security personnel to kill the youth, “let them kill.”

The planned protest did not materialize.

The results were challenged by the PDP and Labour Party, which came second and third in the election, respectively, saying that the vote totals for the major political parties were falsified. Despite repeated protests from the opposition and other Nigerians, including Mr Obasanjo, Mr Mahmood declared the APC flag bearer the election winner.

The Peoples Democratic Party, the Labour Party, and many prominent Nigerians condemned INEC for failing to broadcast election results in real time, as promised in the run-up to the election.

According to INEC data, Tinubu received 37% (8,794,726) of the total votes cast, defeating the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, who received 29% (6,984,520) and Peter Obi, who received 25% (6,101,533).

The major opposition parties have begun the process of filing an appeal against the election results.
On Monday, Mr Abubakar accompanied PDP leaders to challenge the results at INEC.
