United Kingdom Has Appointed A New High Commissioner To Nigeria

The new British High Commissioner to Nigeria has been named Richard Hugh Montgomery.

The United Kingdom government announced his appointment in a statement on Tuesday.
Montgomery is set to start in his new position in April 2023.

Montgomery will succeed Catriona Laing, the UK’s envoy in Nigeria since 2018.

Laing will be assigned to another diplomatic service position, according to the statement.
The high commissioner represents the UK government in a Commonwealth country.

They are in charge of the consulate’s overall direction and operations, including political relations, commerce and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services.

Montgomery served as the counsellor (development) and Head of Office, Department for International Development, Abuja, from 2009-2013.

He holds a PhD in social anthropology from the University of Cambridge, alongside other research-related qualifications from GKW Consult Mannheim and Manchester University.

The diplomat was, most recently, the UK Executive Director for the World Bank Group in Washington.

He has also held executive development roles in Zambia, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.
