Presidential Election: Why INEC Chair, Yakubu Must Go – Melaye

Senator Dino Melaye, a spokesperson for Atiku, Okowa Presidential Campaign Committee, has demanded that the Chairman of the Independent National Election Commission, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, resign.

On Saturday, the former congressman made the demand via his Twitter account.

Melaye’s call comes against the backdrop of Yakubu’s intention to sue over allegations that he rigged the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential election.

Recall that the party had requested that the police and the Department of State Services, DSS, probe the INEC boss for alleged election results tampering.

The PDP claimed the call followed additional assessment of the “the widely-condemned violations, flagrant violation of the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022 and criminal manipulation and altering of election results”.

The PDP claimed that INEC subverted Nigerians’ will in the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections on February 25.

Rotimi Oyekanmi, Yakubu’s Press Secretary, said the call was misguided and challenged the PDP to prove its accusations in court.

He questioned why the party did not provide evidence to back up the false allegations, despite the fact that the electoral commission does not rig elections.

Senator Melaye, however, was not happy and asked that Yakubu be removed, claiming that he “supervised a criminal business yahoo yahoo INEC.”

“Prof Mahmud Yakubu must resign. Such level of criminal audacity & impunity bastardizes the rule of law and diminished him as a referee who scored a goal in a match. Mahmood must goooo,” he tweeted.
