Governorship Election: Low Voter Turnout in Abia State

In several parts of Abia, voter turnout was poor in Saturday’s governorship and assembly elections.

Although accreditation and voting began early, there were few voters.

Voting materials began arriving in polling locations around 8:30 a.m., according to a reporter who visited the state’s Osisioma Local Government Area (LGA), but voters were yet to appear.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) personnel arrived with election materials at 8:00 a.m., according to Chijioke Anyanwu, a party agent in Amasator Ward 3 Polling Unit 92.

He did, however, clarify that voting had not yet begun because no voter had shown up to exercise his franchise.

Mr. Anyanwu expressed confidence that the number of voters would rapidly increase.

At Amasator Ward 3, Polling Unit 009, however, some people had already voted by 8:50 a.m.
