Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate in the February 25 election, has branded the presidential election as the “worst” ever held in Nigeria, admitting that the outcome has saddened him.

“We have seen probably what I consider the worst election in our recent history because of the Electoral law (Act) of 2022, which gave so much hope and the huge expenditure we put into technology,” Mr Obi said Thursday morning on Channels TV.

Mr Obi finished third in the presidential election held by the Independent National Electoral Commission a fortnight ago (INEC).

Mr Tinubu’s election as president-elect is being challenged in court by Messrs Obi and Abubakar.

Mr Obi stated that INEC’s handling of the election was a setback for the country’s democratic process.

He stated that, despite the large number of money spent for the election by President Muhammadu Buhari’s dictatorship, the poll fell short of the Nigerian people’s expectations.

“Do you know what it means to spend over $1 billion? So, there was so much that was promised, and then we went back to what it used to be,” noted Mr Obi. “For me, that is very devastating.”

The former Anambra governor also lampooned INEC over its failure to transmit the electoral results on its portal as promised.

According to him, the electoral umpire’s attitude during the presidential election caused many Nigerians to lose faith in the country’s democratic process.

“Everybody paid so much emphasis on the law and the technology…(sic) when you promise so much and don’t even meet the minimum. Whenever there is an election announced globally, what it does is that it uplifts the ratings of that society,” Mr Obi stated.

He, however, expressed hope that he would get “justice” in court.
