Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari reportedly informed close associates that he does not want to give over power to President-elect Bola Tinubu.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proclaimed Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, the victor of the presidential election on March 1.
According to official INEC results, Tinubu, 70, won in 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states and received a substantial number of votes in numerous states, defeating primary contenders Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who finished second and third, respectively.

According to INEC official figures, Tinubu received 8,794,726 million votes, while the 76-year-old former Vice President, who has already stood for president six times, received 6,984,520 votes, and Obi, who electrified youthful voters in an unprecedented manner in less than a year, received 6,101,533.
Tinubu and President Buhari are both members of the same political party.
According to insiders, the President assured several of his close associates that he does not intend to hand over power to the former governor of Lagos.
“President Buhari may be ready to deal with Tinubu now, he has told his close aides and associates that he doesn’t see himself handing over to him on May 29,” one of the sources said.
“He did not disclose why the thought so. Could it be that he is afraid of handing over power to him? We can’t say but his close associates are already aware of this.”

Tinubu and Buhari’s relationship was the subject of conjecture prior to the APC primary election in 2022, as well as the presidential election on February 25, 2023.
Buhari revealed his ballot paper to the public after voting in the presidential election to verify that he voted for Tinubu.
With the introduction of new notes, a Central Bank of Nigeria policy, with the express authorization of Buhari, prohibited the use of old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes. This removed cash from the system following reports that some politicians had amassed large sums of money in order to buy votes.

The former Lagos governor’s outburst, which spawned the “emi lokan” catchphrase, was thought to have been sparked by a cabal in the Presidency plotting to outwit him in the race.
Tinubu asserted to Ogun State delegates that President would not have emerged without his assistance.
Similarly, Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai claimed that Federal Government agents were plotting to utilize the cash swap scheme and petrol scarcity to create a crisis for a military takeover.
He said, “It is important for the people of Kaduna State, and indeed Nigeria, to know that contrary to the public pronouncements and apparent good intentions, this policy was conceived and sold to the President by officials who completely lost out in the Gubernatorial and Presidential Primaries of the APC in June 2022.

In 2022, news outlets reported Buhari and members of the Aso Rock cabal plotting to retain power in the Northern region in 2023.
According to sources, the President and members of the cabals were secretly supporting Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s nominee against Tinubu.

The cabals, which include some members of Buhari’s extended family and friends, are the powers that be.
According to reports, Buhari approved the payment of billions of naira to cover debts due by the government to enterprises associated to Atiku before the PDP presidential primary on May 28, 2022.
“Do you know why Atiku doesn’t really care about (Rivers State Governor, Nyesom) Wike and others? It’s because President Buhari and the cabals are supporting him,” a source had said.
“Buhari gave him monies that were owed him to enable him win the PDP primary. He asked the richest man in Katsina, Dahiru Mangal, to defect to PDP and support Atiku; the reason Atiku is calling Wike’s bluff.
“With Atiku from the North, as a presidential candidate, they have asked top northerners to work for him irrespective of party affiliation.”
