Former Labour Party Campaign DG, Okupe Drags EFCC To Appeal Court

Doyin Okupe, a former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, has appealed the Federal High Court in Abuja’s money-laundering verdict.

Remember that on December 19, 2022, Justice I. L. Ojukwu convicted Okupe of two counts of money laundering and sentenced him to two years in prison with the option of a 13 million naira fine.

According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Okupe received about N200 million in cash from a former National Security Advisor, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), without going through a bank.

According to the anti-corruption bureau, he breached the provisions of the money laundering statute.

Okupe was found guilty of receiving cash payments in excess of the level permitted by sections 16(1)&(2) of the Money Laundering Act without first obtaining permission from a financial institution.

According to the judge, the embattled Labour Party DG got hundreds of millions of dollars in cash from the office of the former National Security Advisor (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki, while he was in office.

He was given the option of paying the N500,000 fine on each of the 26 counts for which he was found guilty, for a total of N13,000,000, which he has done.

Okupe’s lawyer, Joe-Kyari Gadzama (SAN), filed an appeal on Thursday seeking a reversal of his conviction, alleging that he received the cash sums not in his individual capacity but for the Office of the Senior Special Advisor to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs.
