The state government has condemned the Imo State chapter of the Labour Party for accusing the governor, Hope Uzodimma, of schemes to hijack the party in the state.

The governor is not a member of the Labour Party, according to the Imo government, so what motivation would he have to hijack the party in the state?

According to reports, the Imo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, responded on Tuesday to the charge that Uzodimma was behind the state Labour Party’s present issue.

His statement follows Umar Farouk, the Labour Party’s National Secretary, alleging that Uzodimma was attempting to seize the party following the security services’ raid of its Owerri headquarters.

Farouk asserted that the state government was to blame for the current problem.

But, the state government reacted by claiming it had washed its hands of the self-inflicted troubles plaguing the state’s Labour Party (LP).

Emelumba dismissed the charges as “mischievous and devilish,” claiming that the invasion was the product of infighting inside the state’s ruling party.

He contended that the governor has no need to be concerned about the Labour Party’s internal crisis because he is preoccupied with state matters.

He said that one part of the Labour Party obtained a court order against the establishment of a caretaker committee by another section, necessitating the order’s posting at the state secretariat of the Labour Party.

As a result, the presence of security services on the premises was to ensure that the court order was pasted at the Labour Party Secretariat as mandated by the court.

Emelumba also said that the conflict in the state’s Labour Party began a long time ago, resulting in the state chapter preparing two distinct sites when presidential candidate Peter Obi visited Imo for campaigning.

“It is common knowledge that the Labour Party in IMO STATE has been engulfed in a leadership crisis even before the election. So, it is mischievous and even satanic for the national secretary to accuse the governor of trying to hijack the party.

“Uzodimma is not a member of LP. He is not among those who went to court. He is not threatened by the activities of the party, so why drag his name into their crisis?” Emelumba said.

He, therefore, accused the national secretary of the Labour Party of “misinforming” Nigerians as to the real reasons the police visited their secretariat, noting that “Everybody in Imo State knows that the police were there to enforce a court order and save some rascals from themselves. Imo State Government has absolutely nothing to do with that.”
