NASS Leadership: Opposition Reps-elect Meet As PDP Eyes Speakership Position

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stated that discussions over the leadership of the House of Representatives in the 10th National Assembly are still underway.

Debo Ologunagba, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, revealed this after House of Representatives members-elect from the opposition parties met on Tuesday to establish an alliance ahead of the 10th Assembly’s inauguration in June.

Earlier, news outlets claimed that the opposition’s newly elected members gathered on Tuesday to form a group dubbed Larger Majority’ to work together to influence the election of the Green Chamber’s future leaders.

The opposition members-elect also convened to fine-tune strategy for leveraging their numbers as bargaining power in negotiations with the All Progressives Congress’s speakership aspirants (APC).

The old and new members-elect of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Young Progressives Party were present during the meeting in Abuja (YPP).

In an interview with Newsmen on Wednesday, Ologunagba stated that if the ruling party fails to agree on the next speaker, the PDP will manufacture one.

The PDP spokesman stated that discussions to determine whether the party will produce the next leader of the lower parliamentary house are still in the early stages.

He said, “The conversations are on but we have to be patient with the process. It is true that if things go on as expected, the PDP can produce the speaker but talks are still at a preliminary stage. We will cross the bridge when we get there.”
