Ohanaeze Set To Send High Powered Delegation To Lagos Over Attack on Igbo

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo International Council of Elders has stated its intention to petition President Muhammadu Buhari over the attacks on Igbos since the start of the 2023 general elections.

They also declared that they will write a letter of protest to the National Assembly and other relevant agencies to express their outrage over the attacks on Igbos in Lagos.

The decision was announced in a communique issued following the Elders in Council’s Virtual Meeting in Enugu on Wednesday.

The main Igbo organisation expressed concern and disappointment over the situation in a statement signed by the Chairman, Council of Elders, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the Secretary-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Okey Emuchay, and others.

They announced that a high-powered Igbo delegation would be sent to Lagos to engage with state leaders in order to develop a long-term peaceful and cordial relationship between the Igbo and the Yoruba in Lagos.

According to them, “Amongst other terms of reference, the report must indicate: the number of Igbos killed, the number of Igbos injured and hospitalized, number of Igbos permanently incapacitated.

“The report shall include the comprehensive report of Igbo assets and property destroyed, including the burning of the market.

“These unpatriotic Nigerians destroyed properties belonging to the Igbo. For example, a whole market was burnt. The information available to us reveal that they are still threatening the lives of Igbos and their property in Lagos State.”
